How Payments Work

ToolShed uses Stripe for secure payment processing. Your payment is held and released to the owner after the rental is confirmed complete.

Security Deposits

Deposits are not set by owners. When you book, ToolShed authorizes a refundable hold on your card sized from the tool's replacement value and your trust tier: 100% for new renters, 50% for verified renters, and none for trusted renters. The hold is released on a clean return and only used if a damage claim is approved. See the damage protection page for the full model.

Platform Fees

ToolShed charges renters a 10% service fee on top of the rental price. This fee is shown as a separate line item before you confirm your booking. Owners pay a 7.5% platform commission, deducted from their payout. These fees cover payment processing, dispute mediation, and platform services. Applicable tax is calculated at checkout via Stripe Tax.

Refunds

If an owner cancels your booking, you receive a full refund. For renter-initiated cancellations, the refund amount depends on the owner's cancellation policy.
