Tool rental across the US
Rent Automotive from neighbors near you
A weekend of brake work shouldn't mean buying an engine hoist you'll store forever. Automotive tools are heavy, single-purpose, and pricey: a floor jack, a set of stands, a hoist for one engine pull. ToolShed lets you rent them from a neighbor who already wrenches, do the job in your own garage, and give the gear back.
Automotive you can rent nearby
A sample of what neighbors list. Availability depends on who's near you.
Floor jacks and jack stands
Get the car up safely for brakes, tires, or an oil change.
Torque wrenches
Torque lug nuts and suspension bolts to spec so nothing backs out.
OBD2 scanners
Read the check-engine code yourself before you pay a shop to guess.
Engine hoists
Pull a motor or transmission without buying a hoist for one job.
Impact wrenches
Break loose rusted lug nuts and suspension bolts that fight a hand ratchet.
Why rent instead of buy?
Buying an engine hoist or a full jack-and-stand setup for one project means spending hundreds and then finding somewhere to keep it. Renting from a neighbor gets you the right gear for the weekend, done safely, without the storage problem, and you keep the savings from doing the work yourself instead of paying a shop.

Automotive rental FAQ
How much does it cost to rent automotive tools?
Owners set the rate for each listing, so a code reader and an engine hoist are priced very differently, and it varies by location. You see the full total, including the service fee and any deposit, before you confirm.
Is it covered if something breaks?
Every rental is backed by ToolShed's damage protection, up to $500 per rental. If a tool is damaged while you have it, you file a claim in the app with photos and our team reviews it. It is a limited damage guarantee, not insurance. Read how protection works for the full details. See how protection works
How do I pick up the tools?
Arrange a time with the owner through in-app messaging. Heavier gear like a hoist or a floor jack is usually loaded at their place, so bring a vehicle that can carry it and confirm the weight before you head over.
Is lifting gear safe to rent?
Owners list the condition of every tool and you inspect it at pickup. Use lifting gear on level ground, stay within the rated weight, and never work under a car held up by a jack alone. If anything looks worn, don't accept it and message the owner.
